Wednesday's morning page.

「人は男女ともに幼年期から、あらゆるものによってその知性を慣習的であり独創性に欠けたものにされる」　－　バートランド・ラッセル

バートランド・ラッセルがこの一節をしたためたのは政治論文の中でだが、この概念は私たちの日常生活にもあてはまる。他の大多数と同じような人は、規範に従うこと、常軌を逸しないで枠の内側にとどまることを幼いうちから教えられている。

でも、達成や卓越にとっての最大の障害は失敗にあらず、規範への従順だ。失敗からは学ぶことができるが、ルールを盲目的に守ったり常識にとらわれていると平凡になってしまう。

チャンスがあるのは枠の端っこだ。真ん中にあるのは珍しい。そして、選んだ道において抜きんでた達成を実現する人を見てみたならわかる。彼らはほかと同じであることに逆らう。自分と自分の仕事を、ほかとは違うと差別化する。

真ん中から離れよう。そして端っこにいこう。一番不安を感じるところにいくんだ。

そうして、追い越し車線を走りつづけよう！

Betrand Russell penned that sentence in a political treatise, but the concept also applies to your daily life. If you're like most people, you've been taught from your early years to conform, to stay in the center, within the boundaries.

But your biggest barrier to achievement and excellence is not failure, it's conformity. You learn from failure, but blindly following the rules, and adhering to conventional wisdom, leads to mediocrity.

Opportunity lies on the edges, rarely in the middle. And when you examine the lives of people who have achieved singular excellence in their chosen fields, you see that they resisted sameness, they differentiated themselves and their work.

Get out of the center, and move to the edges. Go where most fear to tread.

And keep moving in the passing lane!
