仕事での面接で、面接官がくりだす重要な質問といえば、「一番最近に読んだ本はなんですか？」じゃないだろうか。さあ、考えてみよう。もしこの質問をだされたら、あなたはどう答えますか？
２００７年のＡＰ通信による世論調査によると、アメリカの成人の４分の１が過去１年間のうちに１冊の本も読んでいなかったという。ビックリじゃないか？ ガッカリじゃないか？ そんなに多くの人たちが、自分の意思をもちながら、精神を飢えさせているんだ。
時代が違えば、書物というものは社会的階級を分かつものだった。ほぼ富裕層だけが書物をもっていて、読み書きができて、人口のうちの一握りだけが人生に向上と広がりをもたせるに足る知識を得ることができた。でも、今の世の中ではそれは言い訳にならない。アンドリュー・カーネギーが１００年以上も前に、誰もが無料の市民図書館を利用できるようにしたんだから。ちなみに、あなたは図書館カードをもっていますか？
読書は、あなたの精神を広げ、あなたの世界を広げて、選択肢を増やすもの。読書することを選択しよう。

If you were in a job interview, a key question the interviewer might ask could be "What were the most recent books you've read?" Now think, if he or she asked you that question, how would you answer?
In a 2007 Associated Press poll, a quarter of US adults reported that they had not read a single book in the past year. Isn't that amazing? And isn't it sad? Large numbers of people, by choice, starve their minds.
In a different age, books were class differentiators. Mostly the rich had books, or could even read, and few of the masses gained sufficient knowledge to really improve and expand their lives. But that's not an excuse today - over a hundred years ago Andrew Carnegie ensured that we all have access to free, public libraries. By the way, do you have a library card?
When you read, you expand your mind, expand your world, and multiply your options. Choose to read.
