ウッディ・ヘイズは、とても名高い、そしてときに気まぐれな、オハイオ出身のアメフトコーチだった。彼は、失敗というものに対して独特な見方をもっていた。

鉱山から掘りだされたばかりのダイアモンドは、いびつだし、よごれているし、魅力的じゃない。そしてカッティングや研磨といった、過酷で機械的な過程をとおりこしたあとに初めて、秘めていた炎と輝きをみせる。

人間もおなじ。群をぬいた卓越や熟達にたどりつく人たちは、その人なりのカッティングと研磨をとおりぬけてきている。失敗を経験する。なにかを失う。過ちから学ぶ。そしてそれらの教訓から、より賢くなって、より腕をあげていく。

あなたにも失敗するときが必ずある。そのときは、自分を許して経験から学ぼう。そうしたら、ゲームに戻るんだ。

Diamonds right out of the mine are rough, blemished, and unattractive. They show their true fire and brilliance only after undergoing the harsh, mechanical process of cutting and polishing.

Likewise, people who achieve singular excellence and mastery get that way by going through their own version of cutting and polishing - experiencing loss and failure, learning from their mistakes, and becoming smarter and better from the experience.

When you fail - and you will - forgive yourself and learn from what happened. Then get back in the game.
